This Role
As Financial Controller for our Japan operations, you will be a senior member of the finance function in a fast-growing, multi-jurisdiction organisation headquartered in the UK. Reporting to the Group Financial Controller, you will own financial reporting, forecasting and control for the Japan entities, and oversee the outsourced finance provider that handles day-to-day transactional processing.
You will be the in-country point of contact for the UK Group Finance function, reconciling local statutory results to Group IFRS reporting, and you will have the opportunity to shape how AI and automation tools change the way a finance function works.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for the Japan entities under J-GAAP and Group IFRS policy.
Own the month-end and year-end close, and submit reporting packs to Group Finance on the consolidation timetable.
Manage in-country consolidation, intercompany eliminations and balance reconciliations with the parent entities.
Lead budgeting and rolling forecasts, with variance analysis that identifies risks and opportunities.
Support the Group Financial Controller with financial modelling, scenario planning and strategic analysis.
Oversee the outsourced finance provider, monitoring SLAs, quality and alignment with internal controls.
Manage the statutory audit and oversee statutory reporting, corporate tax, consumption tax and regulatory filings.
Maintain financial governance, controls and accounting policy consistent with Group requirements.
Bring AI-driven analytics and automation into reporting and forecasting where they improve accuracy and timeliness.
Experience
Experience as a Financial Controller or in a similar senior finance role, ideally in a high-growth or scale-up environment.
Prior exposure to reporting into an international parent or group finance function is desirable.
Experience managing multi-entity finance structures and statutory and tax compliance.
Experience overseeing outsourced finance or shared service providers.
Strong background in budgeting, forecasting and financial modelling.
Experience with ERP or modern finance platforms such as NetSuite, Sage Intacct or Microsoft Business Central.
Skills
Strong practical knowledge of J-GAAP and IFRS reporting, including reconciling local statutory results to Group standards.
Business-level Japanese and English, spoken and written. This is essential for working with local stakeholders and the UK team.
Advanced Excel and financial analysis skills.
Comfortable exploring and implementing AI and automation solutions in finance.
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, including with an overseas parent company.
Commercially minded, detail-focused and at ease working across time zones between Japan and the UK.
Qualifications
Qualified accountant: J-CPA, US CPA or ACCA.
